This atmospheric autumn landscape by Takamori Saigan (1847–1917), unfolds through delicate ink work and restrained colour. Russet trees occupy the foreground, while tall pines and steep mountain crags frame a waterfall descending through the centre of the composition. A diminutive figure introduces a quiet human presence within the expansive setting, and pale washes soften the distant ridges. The calligraphic inscription and red seals complete a composition rooted in the close relationship between painting, poetry, and contemplation. An excerpt from the poem reads: "... Ten years dwelling in seclusion, forgotten by the world. Why in this life should one submit to bridle and halter? Stone for sandals, cloud for a robe; a heart like the clear spring, a form like the crane..."

Born in Chiba, Saigan studied painting under Yamamoto Kinkoku and Confucian scholarship under Hattori Randai, later establishing a private academy in Negishi, Tokyo. Known for his landscapes and flower paintings, he worked within the Chinese-inspired nanga, or literati-painting, tradition during the Meiji and early Taishō periods. His scholarly background informed an approach in which brushwork and literary expression were closely connected. Examples of his painting are held in the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.

Mounted as a hanging scroll with patterned brocade borders and a warm brown outer stiff mounting, the work measures 41.7 inches high by 21.7 inches wide overall (106 × 55 cm), with the painting itself measuring 16.9 by 20.1 inches (43 × 51 cm). The painting and mounting themselves show graceful aging, toning, and creasing. Accompanied by a period wooden storage box, it offers an evocative expression of the Japanese literati landscape tradition.
