Done in a style reminiscent of Japanese Mingei art, this striking yet functional folk-craft piece is the creation of Chikuunsai Tanabe III. Made entirely of traditional materials, the red lacquer is quite eye-catching and is sure to liven up any setting.

As the name suggests, Chikuunsai (1940-2014) is from a line of woodworkers—“Chiku” in this case meaning bamboo. This family of generational artists currently stretches to the 4th generation—the 4th being known for his large and intricate installation pieces. Exhibiting widely during his lifetime, both in Japan and overseas, Tanabe was the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Contemporary Decorative Art Prize in 2009. Works by this artist have been acquired by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and are held in their permanent collection today.

In fine condition, this masterfully crafted lacquer vase is 3.2 inches at its widest point (8 cm) and stands 13.4 inches tall (34 cm). Tanabe’s signature can be seen on the side of the piece, written in black lacquer, and the vase comes housed in its original wood box signed and sealed by the artist. **International shipping and insurance included in the price.
